Iran repeats support to Syria against Israeli threats

Damascus - Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi repeated on Friday his country's support to Syria in the face of "Israeli threats" against Damascus.

"Iran supports Syria ... in the face of aggression and threats by enemies," Rahimi told a joint press briefing with Syrian Prime Minister Naji al-Otri.

Rahimi vowed to "break the Zionist entity's legs if they think of having evil ideas against Lebanon, Syria and Iran."

Israel has accused Syria of providing Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah with Scud missiles, and described it as a "disturbing threat to the region's stability."

Lebanon and Syria have dismissed the allegations of the missile transfer as "lies."

Rahimi's statement comes shortly after US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton warned Syria and Iran of taking actions that threaten the security of Israel.

"Syria and Iran are standing strong in the face of challenges and threats...and we support each other, and our steadfastness has been the best evidence of our cooperation," al-Otri said.

Rahimi was in Damascus to attend a joint economic commission to boost trade between the two countries.

"We have put a road map to develop our economic relations to live up to the level of political relations," he said, with the bilateral trade volume projected to exceed five billion dollars per year in the coming period.
