Lebanese FM Calls on Middle-East to Confront Israel's N. Arsenals

"Today, It is an obligatory task for the middle-eastern states to cooperate with each other to confront the nuclear weapons possessed by the Zionist regime," al-Shami said in an exclusive interview with FNA on Monday.

He blasted West's attitude towards the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and said, "Unfortunately, the western countries, the US in particular, are producing nuclear and mass-destruction weapons (WMDs) under the guise of peaceful use of the technology. Then they transfer these weapons to such a dangerous regime as Israel in violation of Article VI of NPT."

Article VI of the NPT says that "Each of the Parties to the Treaty undertakes to pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament, and on a Treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control".

He also said that possession of nuclear arms under the pretext of ensuring national security and strategy is against all international rules and regulations.

Israel is believed to be the sole possessor of nuclear arms in the Middle East with over 200 ready-to-launch warheads in its stockpile.
