Lawmakers Call on Egypt to Curb Weapons Smuggling

Arlen Specter (R-PA) on Dec. 26 said future U.S. aid to Egypt should depend on Cairo cracking down on weapons smuggling into the Hamas -ruled Gaza Strip, the Associated Press reported. “Egypt can do a lot more,” said Specter, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “And if they don’t, I think it would be appropriate to condition aid to them on that factor.” Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), a member of the House Appropriations Committee traveling with Specter, said he agreed with the five-term senator. Washington gives Egypt about $2 billion in annual aid, including $1.3 billion in military assistance. Since Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, the terrorist group Hamas has overseen a massive arms buildup, much of it through tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border.

Florida Legislature Approves Iran Divestiture Bill

Lawmakers Urge Arrests in Hizballah Bombing

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Lantos (D-CA) and Ranking Member Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) have sent a letter to Interpol questioning the international police agency's ongoing investigation into the terrorist army Hizballah 's 1994 bombing of the Argentine Israel i Mutual Aid Association. The letter urged that arrests be made for the warrants issued by Argentina. Eighty-five people were killed and hundreds wounded in the country's worst terrorist attack. On Oct. 25, a team of Argentine prosecutors formally charged Iran and Hizballah with the bombing, accusing the Iran ian authorities of directing Hizballah to carry it out and calling for the arrest of former Iran ian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and seven others.
